Ghana Vrs Guinea in Afcon 2015 quarter finals

Ghana will face Guinea in the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals on Sunday, after lots were drawn to determine whether they (Guinea) or Mali would progress from group D.

Mali and Guinea played out a 1-1 stalemate on Wednesday after having each drawn their previous two games in the group, meaning their fates had to be determined by a random draw on Thursday.

After the lots were cast, Guinea were the successful side in the proceedings run by the Afcon Organising Committee in Malabo, meaning they advance behind Group D winners Cote d'Ivoire.

The Black Stars will face off with Guinea on Sunday in the last-eight.

The stars qualify to the quarter final of the Africa Cup of Nations 2015s,  after a brilliant 83rd-minute header from Olympique Marseille winger, Andre Dede Ayew.

Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah dies

Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz has died in hospital, royal officials have announced.

A statement, made early on Friday, said his brother, Salman, had become king.

Before the announcement, Saudi television cut to Koranic verses, which often signifies the death of a senior royal.

King Abdullah, who was said to be aged about 90, had been in hospital for several weeks suffering from a lung infection.

Abdullah came to the throne in 2005 but had suffered frequent bouts of ill health in recent years.

King Salman, 79, had recently taken on the ailing monarch's responsibilities.
The late king's half brother Muqrin, who is in his late 60s, has been named the new crown prince, the official statement said.

All three are sons of the founder of modern Saudi Arabia, King Abdulaziz, usually referred to as Ibn Saud, who died in 1953.

King Salman called on the royal family's Allegiance Council to recognise Muqrin as his crown prince and heir.

"His Highness Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and all members of the family and the nation mourn the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, who passed away at exactly 1am this morning," the statement said.

US President Barack Obama expressed his personal sympathies and those of the American people, on the death of King Abdullah.

"As a leader, he was always candid and had the courage of his convictions. One of those convictions was his steadfast and passionate belief in the importance of the US-Saudi relationship as a force for stability and security in the Middle East and beyond," he said.

Abdullah was the 13th of the 37 sons of King Abdulaziz. He is believed to have been born in August 1924 in Riyadh, although there is some dispute about his actual birth date.

When he came to the throne in 2005 he succeeded another half-brother, Fahd.
However, he had already been Saudi Arabia's de-facto leader for 10 years because his predecessor had been debilitated by a stroke.

Correspondents say Abdullah was seen as a reformer at home, albeit a slow and steady one.

He allowed mild criticism of his government in the press, and hinted that more women should be allowed to work.

Police picks up ‘fake’ AIDS ambassador Dzidzor Mensah

The embattled former AIDS ambassador Joyce Dzidzor Mensah has been picked up by the Police CID, StarrFMonline.com has gathered.

It’s unclear what has provoked her invitation.

She is currently being interrogated at the CID headquarters, according to PRO of the Police CID ASP Joseph Benefo Darkwa.

The 27-year-old mother of two, who had been an Ambassador for the Ghana Aids Commission (GAC) in the fight against discrimination against people living with HIV, recently told News-One that she never tested positive for the disease.

Per the AIDS Commission’s regulations, only HIV-positive persons can be Ambassadors in the “Heart to Heart” campaign.

Dzidzor Mensah, who confessed to faking her status just to help in the national fight against discrimination against persons living with HIV status said she is sorry for deceiving the country.

A meeting between her and the AIDS Commission ended inconclusively in December 2014.

Egypt's President calls for a 'religious revolution'

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has called for a "religious revolution," asking Muslim leaders to help in the fight against extremism.
In a speech celebrating the birthday of the Prophet Muammad, which coincided with New Year's Day, he said they had no time to lose.
"I say and repeat, again, that we are in need of a religious revolution. You imams are responsible before Allah. The entire world is waiting on you. The entire world is waiting for your word ... because the Islamic world is being torn, it is being destroyed, it is being lost. And it is being lost by our own hands," el-Sisi said.
"We need a revolution of the self, a revolution of consciousness and ethics to rebuild the Egyptian person -- a person that our country will need in the near future," the President said.
El-Sisi, himself a pious man, was elected in May after leaving the military to run for the office.
A former defense minister, he led the ouster of Mohamed Morsy -- the Islamist who was Egypt's first democratically elected President -- and has long positioned himself as a more secular option, and defender against extremist views.
"It's inconceivable that the thinking that we hold most sacred should cause the entire Islamic world to be a source of anxiety, danger, killing and destruction for the rest of the world. Impossible that this thinking -- and I am not saying the religion -- I am saying this thinking," el-Sisi said.
He continued: "This is antagonizing the entire world. It's antagonizing the entire world! Does this mean that 1.6 billion people (Muslims) should want to kill the rest of the world's inhabitants -- that is 7 billion -- so that they themselves may live? Impossible!"
While el-Sisi's speech included some powerful language, H.A. Hellyer, a nonresident fellow at the Center for Middle East Policy at the Brookings Institution and research associate at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, said the President has made similar statements in the past.
"There is little to suggest (el-Sisi) is interested in some sort of Lutheran reformation of Islam. By all accounts, he's quite comfortable with the prevailing leadership of the Azhari establishment.
"If anything, he wants to empower it further in order to push forward a counternarrative against radical Islamism. The real question is: How credible can such a state-empowered counternarrative be?" Hellyer said.
On Tuesday, the President visited the main Coptic cathedral in Cairo to attend a Christmas mass and make a short speech. He is the first president to attend such a mass since the revolution.
"We will build our country together. We will accommodate each other. We will love each other," el-Sisi said in that speech.

Kwasi Appiah Sacked

Black Stars coach Kwasi Appiah has been relieved of his position as head coach of the senior national team.

The decision was reached today at a board meeting of the GFA.

Serbian trainer Milovan Rajevac will replace him as head coach of the Black Stars.

Mr Appiah is being accused of bad faith after he granted a radio interview in which he said that he had not asked for a technical assistant, contradicting the position of the GFA.

Sources close to the GFA say the condition under which coach Milovan accepted to Ghana was that he is made the substantive coach. He refused to be technical assistant to Kwasi Appiah, the source said.

The GFA has scheduled a meeting with Coach Appiah tomorrow Friday, at which the FA will discuss his severance package with him.

Before Ghana’s game against Togo there were reports that the former Ghana captain had been told he will be fired if he failed to win the game in Lome after drawing 1-1 with Uganda at the Baba Yara stadium in Kumasi on Saturday.

Appiah's popularity in Ghana dwindled immensely after Ghana's poor World Cup outing, with many Ghanaians displeased with his perceived lack of control of the Black Stars team.
